Rob Hall had booked us in at the Garuda Hotel, a friendly establishment in the heart of Thamel, Kathmandu's tourist district. The Garuda has been popular with expeditions bound for the Himalayas, and its walls were covered with signed photographs of famous alpinists who'd slept there over the years.
